Sears Crossthreaded two lug bolts... Whos fault? ( new tires )
So this should be a great way to start my Sunday!!! So Saturday ( yesterday ) I get up 10am
goto Sears and get 4 new tires mounted and balanced + wheel alignment on my girlfriends
Honda Accord, Get home around 4pm after lunch and then proceed to put new brake pads on
the front ( should be easy right? They just did tires earlier ) WRONG!!!!

Start on front left, break 4 bolts loose by hand with breaker bar, Jack car up remove all 4 bolts
and put the new pads on..

Start on front right goto loosen bolt one fine, Bolt 2 gets 2 turns and tightens right up, reverse a
little try again ( SNAP ), Go on to bolt 3, same thing.. 2 turns gets tight, turn back 2 turns try again
and SNAP!....

At this point I have 2 snapped bolts, Called Sears and they instructed me to call Sunday when manager
is there?

Is it me or is this clearly there fault of most likely shooting them on with the gun? I mean its pretty clear
they came off fine when they did the tires and this happened when they rammed them back on with a gun.

Ive never had this happen in my 15+ years of working on cars and they just worked on it the same day.

Just preparing myself for this convo Im about to have in 7 hours, Im assuming there going to push back but it doesn't
seem like they will have much to stand on.

Thoughts??

I wouldn't put it past me that the over tightened them... It's a cheap fix, 10 bucks max and maybe 20 minutes... But still their fault if they over tightened it.. Doubt they will take responsibility for it lol at my work we get in trouble if we don't use the correct torque stick for the car but i know people who worked for sears and said it was never like that there

Thats a tough one..because if they did do that,I would not want them to touch it again.
If they cant put lugnuts on properly, then they are not working on my car again...sorry
I would rather fix it myself at that point.

They will most likely deny it.
I would tell them you had it fixed elsewhere or something and try to get a couple bucks back towards another purchase(like a sears gift card)

Well with the Accord it looks like you have to either remove the hub to do it and then have the bearings re-packed,
or you have to do a work-around like this - Honda 6th gen (1998-2002) wheel stud replacement (grinding method) - Honda-Tech

I dont see how they cant own up to it being, if they put them on ( were talking same day not months later )
Theres no reason why I should not be able to remove the lugnuts less than 6 hours later.

We shall see, I have a kid and work 50+ hours a week I barely have time to work on any of our cars lately.

Your fault for bringing to Sears... yes you have to press out the hub to change them

Yes, I see that now.. Only so many places to get a good price on tires mount/balanced around here for the GF's car so nothing special just the basics..

Anyway went there and they will fix no questions asked and they apologized.

They did the right thing by making it right on their dime. Lucky you.

I know thank god, I mean its kinda obvious if they were able to change the tires fine.. Just glad I was able to
catch it fast while doing the brakes.. If this happened if we got a flat or something down the road it would be
on my dime and my GF would be stuck on the side of the road.

I cant complain they stepped up with 0 complaints..

Somewhat similar situation.. I ordered a new wheel/tire combo from discount tire direct.... At first the new lug nuts they sent me went on easy, then they got really tight. Long story short I stripped 4 wheel studs BC the lug nuts they sent me weren't the right size, had to have the car towed. Called Them and explained and they paid for the tow, sent me the correct size (bigger) lugs overnight for free and paid the shop to install new wheel studs. Major inconvenience but they made good on
their mistake and paid for everything.
