Permatex RTVs; Ultra Grey VS The Right Stuff on oil pan?
Hey guys, after looking closer at my NX once I got it home I realized that the oil pan has a small leak. I talked to a friend and did some research and they both said that Permatex would do the trick. I looked on quite a few threads, forums and Permatex's website. It seems that a lot of people have had good results with it. I'm just torn between the two because for every person who said Ultra Grey another said The Right Stuff. After watching a video and reading some more on The Right Stuff, it sounds like it is better than Ultra Grey (or maybe it's just a marketing fluke), however it isn't specified for imports like Ultra Gray? Pardon my ignorance, this is my first project car.

What makes a difference is this - making sure that the lower oil pan is flat and square if you are re-using it. Also, Torquing the bolts to the correct tightness in the correct order. I have found this to make the difference between leaking and sealing.

I thought that might do the trick, however I think I still might use some RTV just for the peace of mind. I'm just waiting now to give my friend a ride to work, I'll check it once I get back.

I used Permatex grey on my upper and lower oil pan, been three years now and not one leak. Make sure the surfaces are very clean, then run a nice bead on the surface. Cross tighten and torque the bolts to spec and you shouldn't have a problem.

I went with Ultra Grey. I took my oil pan off yesterday and there was a big dent on the backside of the oil pan which makes me a bit nervous because the previous owner drove it 60 miles to my house. New oil pan is on the way.

I had a big dent too. Pounded it out, used grey rtv, properly tightened/torqued bolts, no issues.
