Thread: rattling

Here's another one of those rattling valvetrain noise threads. i have a marble-in-a-jar sound that only happens from 2500 to 3000 r.p.m. under no load. i have read the threads on the timing chain tensioner and rod knock, they don't give a difinate(sp?) answer. Anybody have any insight that would be grateful

Make a video so we can hear? Also youtube some rod knock videos and compare, since it often sets in at only some RPMS.

If it were the timing chain guide you would hear it loudly at idle also.

Where in the engine bay is the sound coming from? From the top of the motor around the valve cover area?

Guide out of the FSM:

it is coming from the top of the motor

pull the valve cover and check rocker arms, HLA's, and cam journals for runout.
