Thread: Car won't move, axle issue or clutch issue??

So I can't seem to figure out why my car will not go properly. I can put it into gear and reverse, but it barely rolls if at all. However when its on jack stands and I tap the gas the wheels seem to be moving just not as much as they should, so I was guessing it was either a bad clutch or an axle problem. After further investigating I found out that the axles in the car are for ABS and my car is non ABS, I called around to Autozone, Advanced Auto, Pep Boys, and Napa, and they said there was no difference that they knew of, but then I looked at the seal where they go to the tranny and saw this:

It looks as though the axles aren't in all the way, so i'm thinking the Non-ABS may be a bit longer than the ABS ones that I currently have in there, unless this is how they're supposed to look? Could this be the reason for the problem i'm having?

It looks like that axles has to go in a bit more.

the drivers side axel is not in all the way. the only difference between abs and non abs is the ring gear which is pressed on. I think I have removed the gear and used the axel on a non abs car. Its been a while though.

There's actually no difference in length between ABS/non-ABS.You just need to get that axle into the tranny a little further.It probably shoved in to that point pretty easy,but it's not far enough. There is a snap ring on the inside that sometimes needs a good smack to get it all the way in.You'll need to pull the hub back off to get a clean hit on the end of the axle.Be sure to put the nut on the end,and use a piece of wood between the axle and the hammer to protect the threads.And somebody to help hold it while you smack it.It's best if the splines in the tranny line up as well,takes less hitting with a hammer that way.I think that's everything.Anyone else got a suggestion?

Has it ever worked with thw axles like that?Looks like you have a LSD Axle and a non LSD trans.

I'm not sure, this has been a project car for a couple years so I havent actually gotten it driving yet. How can I tell if I have an LSD trans or not...sorry if its a dumb question.

No problem at all but maybe someone else can help you with that question because I'm not sure but LSD axles are always longer and can be causing your issue.

A good picture of the tranny on the drivers side further back from where you took the first picture would be a good start. the lsd tranny has a hump(raised dome) on the drivers where the axel goes in. the lsd unit is flat in that area.
