Thread: Transmission part name?

Trying to read courtesy's diagrams. There is a seal where the shift rod goes into the transmission...is that a "striking rod seal" in the nissan universe?
In other universes, it would be called an "input shaft seal"? To clarify, its not the flexible seal, but the one that gets drifted into the tranny case.

Yes, there is a rod called the striking rod, and that seal is called a striking rod seal. The striking rod connects to the shift lever in the cabin, and moves the shift forks around inside the transmission to choose the gears.

In other universes, it would NOT be called an "input shaft seal". The input shaft is the shaft that takes the torque from the engine and has gears attached. If that is the seal you need, then you don't want the "striking rod seal".

That strike rod seal is a huge pain to change out, and often leaks. If you plan on replacing it also buy the pins that go in the shift rod because you have to hammer them out to replace that seal.

I am assuming that the pin is called a "striking rod pin"...is there only one right?

Yeah its 32898 in that diagram. You would do well to get the car as high off the ground as possible to get room and use a big hammer and punch to knock it out. Not fun but if you have a bigger friend (I'm only ~180lb) it will help to have them around.

I did this once with the tranny off the car and it was still a pretty big fight.

yeah i took one out of a spare trans i had. was a beeyatch. Ill have it on a lift.
