Wouldn't you guys says the great majority of people getting engine work done DO NOT use a torque plate? I mean, these things for the SR20 block are not very common at machine shops and have to be specially made/ordered. My engine was bored/honed w/out one and it's running great. I think I have close to 5k miles on the motor(maybe more?).

you should use a head gasket to protect the mating surfaces while your measuring. You can also torque down the mls head gasket with the ge head studs. I took my motor apart three times before I was happy. no issues with the head gasket or head studs. I am using a vet head gasket and ge head studs.

I sent my block to Mazworx to have them bore it out. It is one of those things that is just insurance. You could get away with it but why risk it? Also, you could have issues that are not noticeable like uneven wear that may lead to premature failure. 5K miles is not enough to prove one way or the other.
