Another bad MPG thread
so i have a problem . i've been getting bad milage on my car( unless im jsut going mad) . A few weeks ago i went to my mechanic and he said my Catalytic converter needs to be replaced, he said its no biggie you can still drive around. Foward round the past couple weeks i've noticed my MPG has gotten a bit bad. just want to make sure if its the cat. that's doing this or is this normal gas consumption or something probably else.

car is stock , just had a new gasket valve cover installed few weeks ago . only drive it to work 7 - 8 miles one way.

put 15 $ @(4.25) worth of gas , remember saying it put 3.222 (close to that)gallons .
- Monday(M), thursday(THR),friday(F),then today sat.

You're measuring your gas consumption with a piece of tape stuck to the instrument panel? Is there a reason you're not using the odometer to measure the miles and then dividing by the number of gallons used? You know, "miles per gallon"...

Until you get actual MPG reading, you're not going to know if it's even an issue.

I'd say your mileage is pretty good. If you drive 16 miles a day for 5 days thats 80 miles divided by 3.22 is ~25mpg. Unless its completely highway miles, thats pretty good.

Very strange post indeed...

But anyways, by the look of those gauges you're car is OBDII thus has a rear O2 sensor.
If the cat is going out then that sensor will tell you by activating the check engine light.

If you know anyone who has a scanner that can show you what both O2 sensors are reading that that'll tell you what's going on.
(The two sensors should be reading the same thing)
If the rear sensor is reading higher than the front then the cat is bad.
If the front is reading higher than the rear then the front sensor is bad.
If the cat is blocked then the car won't run.

If you replace the cat you should also replace both sensors.

its wasnt for five, it was three days . i that last line(sat.) was before i went to go get gas ... or even drove to work that day. so new line = a new day of driving ... before i drove off. oh yeah its all street miles.
