Do I Repaint the Whole Bumper?
Long story short, some ballsack decided to hit my rear bumper in the parking lot at work. Unfortunately, my work is located next to a Piccadilly restaurant... "Not over 70, wear dentures, can't see... no service". Basically, it's a food trough for old people.

No major damage to the bumper, i.e. it's not broken, dented or pushed in. But, there is a "rough" area about 6" in diameter, and the paint is peeling off in that area. I got the car repainted in original color, and still have about 1 pint of paint left.

I got the car repainted less than 2 years ago, and other than a few road chips on the bottom of the quarter panels, the paint still looks pretty good. I really don't have the time to make the effort and have the whole rear bumper repainted(plus, I'm through throwing mad money at a 17 1/2 year old car), so I'm hoping some of you body guys have got a solution.

I just want it to match the original color(Aspen White) and to keep the rest of the paint near the area from spreading further.

Any personal experience you'd care to share... that worked, would be most welcome.

Can't you just tape off the damaged area, sand it down and repaint it like that? Or is the color change really that big of a difference?

There is no color change, other than some of the old sanded down paint underneath is a bit faded... nonglossy, you could say.

I guess I could tape off an area a bit past the cracked paint and sand that down. I'll probably have to take the bumper off to do a decent job. I'd like to use the pint of paint I have left, but I have no way to apply it, i.e. no spray gun.

Hmmm, I seem to remember reading a few years ago that you could get your paint code done up in a spray can, but I don't remember where I read about it... probably the old forum. If that's possible, I could probably get a spray can of of clear coat, too.

I'd really want to use the right paint code, but even more importantly, I want to prevent the cracks from spreading.

Thanks for the feedback.

There's a website for it, I ordered a spray can of the charcoal mist metallic, the color of my car, to get some rust spots on the trunk.

Try this out, just googled it, maybe some other people know better ones or what not.

http://www.expresspaint.com/how_to_order/

11oz. Aerosol can of the paint I have on my car on that site costs $24.95.

i am a painter and it depends on the area of damage...normally its a rule of thumb you paint the whole bumper but you can spot in anything especially a solid color. to reference the spreading...it shouldnt spread if the bumper was prepped properly and if its spider cracks than its best left alone. to truely get rid of spider cracks you must go down to the plastic and than you have to adhesion promote its a hassle. message me if you have any other questions.

just dont go to a bodyshop and ask to spot in your bumper its not worth their time and they will do a scrap job

^ Evan, on that same site it has a step by step on how to apply the paint, is it an actual good way to apply it?

Nice site, but no color matches for my car, '91 SE-R. I know I can call by phone, but it'd be nice to actually "see" it first... I'm paranoid.

Evan, I'll pm you later. I'm going to do a bit more research first, though. Paint and prep is the only thing I haven't done on my car... other than some wetsanding on the old paint. I'd like to keep the ignorant questions I'll end up asking to a minimum.

Thanks for the advice, gentlemen.
