Thread: WTF Cusco?

I had the gtir strut bar (the one that's made to clear the top mount) and it was indeed aluminum.

It could very well be that Cusco changed them from aluminum to steel in the last few years.

I got mine 10 years ago from a buddy who was stationed in Okinawa and he pulled it off a gtir in a junkyard. He also got one for my friend Robert. That one was so chipped, that Robert just got some aircraft remover and stripped it to a bare aluminum finish. As far as I know, with the only 2 Cusco strut bars I ever dealt with, I always thought they're supposed to be aluminum.

As of today I started removing all the paint on mine and noticed the whole underside of the bar was bubbling up. Obviously from sitting liquid. My only guess that would cause that would be degreaser which I do use after oil changes to clean the bay and hood. The end mounts are very thick but, as far as the center towards the ends that paint is hardly a micro thick and down very cheap. Honestly I don't even believe it was clear coated.

You can remove it and it will never do it again. :encouragement:

10 years is a long time in the life of our little cars. Since all the newer ones in the twin tube style are steel, that is now a rare piece indeed. Heck, the bars we had made were still in the catalog but out of production in 2005. Because we placed an order for 50 or so they agreed to make more. In any case, glad to have this cleared up.

Now @Serban are you coming to the convention??

I had no idea those went out of production in 05. For all I know that strut bar was 20 years old, I should have kept it!

Won't be able to make the convention this year. Just started a new job and no time off yet. There's always next year! The 240 might be in better shape by then

Wayne,dont forget you took that car to WI with you.I am sure its more likely the salt on the roads in WI and in the air in WI and SFL was the cause of that rust,not degreaser.
I have not had these problems with any of mine,and I degrease at least every oilchange.

I remember Serbans NX rusting from the salt air down there,actually.I have also had friends on the gulf coast that have had some rust from the salt air.

I am in the center of the state,so no rust probs here.

Well not really. My car saw 2 days of snow and that was it. Not even driven on those 2 days. And living in Florida, it get more salt on the body then it ever would being up north. But here is my final work on it.
