Well, I went out and started the car. Still doing the erratic idle bullshit. Turned it off. Bah!
Popped the hood.
Temporary-fixed the bad vacuum hose by cutting off the dead end and simply sticking it back on. It had enough slack, and it will work until I get to a parts store.

Found this connector in that same general area. It goes to nothing I can find. Is this part of the cruise-control system that I had removed?

Unplugged the MAF connector. Blew it out, checked it with a flashlight, every thing on both sides looked clean and shiny. No corrosion. Mike's splice fix is still tightly wrapped. Plugged it back in firmly.

Unplugged and plugged back in other similar engine-bay connectors, one that went to the O2 bung on the header, etc..etc.. All of them appeared to be clean and shiny in both sides.
Re-checked the boots on the spark plugs, firm and tight.
Fired the car back up. Idle is rock-steady at 900 RPM. Took it for a spin, drove it briskly, red-lined though the first three gears. Stopped a few times, every couple of miles. Red-lined it again upon take-off. Stopped again. Rock steady idle at 900 RPM's every time.
Perhaps some dust or grit had worked its way into that MAF connector?
Whatever it was, it apparently got "fixed" while I was poking around in there.
Gracias gentlemen!
