Starter Rebuild
I am having intermittent starting issues. It seems like the copper contacts may be bad in the starter (plunger and diodes) This happened recently on my 1993 4runner with a 3vz engine. You can purchase a "starter rebuild kit" for about $20 all over the internet (and I think at the dealer). Anyway, I replaced the plunger and contacts that came with the kit and it worked perfectly - plus it was cheap.

Anybody know if this same kit exists for our starters? I googled around but haven't come up with it yet. I have a 1994 SE-R, manual trans.

Not sure about the kits but just something to check before you go through all that trouble is the switch under the clutch pedal. A lot of times when it starting to break it might make contact and sometimes not. Just something easy to check if you haven't already. Good luck

I would check the clutch interlock switch as well. If you have a Mitsubishi starter you can get a rebuild kit. If you have a Hitachi your out of luck. You can also pick up a re-manufactured unit fairly cheap.

Miko was selling some used ones for $75. That's what it did it would have cost only a little less than that to completely rebuild mine.

The clutch switch under the dash is working - just seems like the starter contacts are getting wornp - problem is getting progressively worse. Thought I would check about the kits before I buy a rebuilt starter - thanks guys
