SR20DE Tapping Noise - *video inside*
Finally got a good video of it making the noise:

Sometimes it will make the noise, sometimes not. Only noticeable at idle coming from the valve cover area.

2001 RR Engine, 127K miles, oil pressure normal. 40 weight oil. Motor drives great otherwise.

What do you guys think?

First guess would be lash adjusters. Pull the valve cover and see if there's any play in them.

sounds like the timing chain tensioner. also the rr uses solid lifters so you would not get noise like a hvla valve train.

that fsm also shows a motor with out roller rocker valve train as well. I never pulled a rr apart so I am now unsure if its got solid or hvla lifters.

I also see it shows a motor with a 8cw crank. I checked my 2000-2006 fsm and it shows the same crap. Looks like that fsm came from the same place as mine.

Injector tick,i get the same only some times like, might happen cold be or warm, just depends, they can be really noisey, but that normal, nothing wrong with them, also if the engine is running like it should be, then don,t think any more about it.

Google sr20 injector noise/ticking ect

A neat trick I learned to pinpoint noises is to take a length of hose and use it as a listening device. If you put one end against, say an injector or the valve cover, it will help you pinpoint where the tick is coming from. A length of old garden hose or clear siphon hose works well. If you're an MD, you can just use your stethoscope.

Not sure it's injector tick from the videos I've seen on YouTube. Not sure what it is to be honest. When the sound crops up again I'll see if I can pinpoint the area of the motor it's coming from.
