I need some help with 5-speed transmission logic. b13 lsd transmission
I have a 1992 b13 with a 5-speed, this trans has 5th gear pop out since about 2005. I am currently replacing the clutch and front wheel bearings so it only makes sense to repair the 5th gear with a kit that I bought online.

The transmission started making a weird noise (rattling bearing sound)when I swapped in the VVL about a year ago, I also want to look for this noise and repair it because I believe it’s an issue with the bearings in the transmission. It makes a rattling sound while the car is in neutral. If I press onto the clutch the noise goes away till I release the clutch. I don’t think the issue is the clutch but more along the lines of the input shaft bearings. when i installed the vvl i replaced the old throwout bearing with a new one and i think pressing the clutch puts pressure on the input shaft causing the bearings to tighten up.

When the car is in neutral and the engine on is the only shaft spinning the input shaft in the trans?

If that’s the case it would be safe to assume that one of the 2 bearings on the input shaft are bad and need to be replaced? Right?

Has anyone replaced any bearings in their transmissions?

Yeah its pretty much normal for any higher mileage b13/b14/b15/p11 transmission and yes its related to worn bearings. It doesnt mean its going to blow up or grenade or any of that and is more of an annoyance than anything. You can use a thicker gear oil and it will usually go away or pretty much go away. but if your going to rebuild it anyways, replace all the bearings inside. The input shaft front and rear bearing and the mainshaft front and rear bearing and then the diff bearings as well. After that it should be quiet as a mouse.

I had the similar symptoms and came to the same conclusion about my transmission. The transmission made some faint grinding noises when the fluid was very warm and it would sound like it was "whirring" down when I pressed in the clutch pedal. Yes, the input shaft is the only one spinning with the car in neutral, at rest, with the clutch engaged. While I was in the transmission I decided to replace all four shaft bearings instead of just the two. It has been a few years and the noise has not returned.

I have the part numbers for each bearing and pictures of the work all in this Facebook album: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.141798490099.144827.719285099&type=1&l=f68f8de841

For reference the proper Nissan part numbers are:
32273-50J00
32219-50J00
32223-50J00
32203-D0100

Each bearing was around $45 a few years ago from Greg Vogel at G-Spec.

Keep in mind you'll want to have a press and pullers available. Also use the FSM and feeler gauges to make sure two of the bearings are pressed on to the shaft at the correct depth. (I winged it and did it by eye before I knew any better and lucked out. Don't do what I did.)

As for 5th gear pop-out. I don't think I can say more about that than I already have in the 5th gear pop-out thread.

I can't say for sure, both those first 4 look right. I have no idea about this thing though, as I did not replace that, whatever that is.

I don't know man, I would leave those be.
If you insist, I would get OEM though. Try Greg Vogel at www.gspec.com for pricing.
