Ya, like everybody said, you got the Coolant tempersture sensor (CTS). The unit you are looking for is called "Temperature Sensor" by Nissan. You can tell the guy at the parts counter that it is visible in section 253 of the Nissan parts catalogue for the '97 SER. The part code is 25080X. A part number does not show up. Here is a picture of what it will look like...(spade-style connector on top)
You can also get it at advance autoparts for like $8-10. An aftermarket part here is not a big deal as it only sends the temp. info to the gauge cluster but doesn't affect how the car runs. I'm rocking an aftermarket one on my VE.
It wouldn't hurt to replace both of those sensors. I think a lot of the rough idle issues we see on the forum are due to that sensor. It also can help with fuel economy and general performance. The 2 sensors are right next to each other.Might as well do both of them.

all this hassle for no reason.
if you want a new one go to an auto parts store they will most likely have it doenst have to be from nissan anyway
This. OEM part for this is unnecessary. Also, if you really want the part #, I'm sure you can find it on courtesy part's website. I always use their site to get part #'s so that when I call greg v for something, there is no mistake.
