THIS!!!!! I am freeing paranoid in loosening and retightening, almost to a level of OCD. Another reason why it says "cams are a pain the ass" under my screen name, they really are, in this motor. Sure it's more difficult in new cars and motors with all the stuff you need to remove first, but still.

I'm pretty confident the way I'm installing and uninstalling is the proper way of doing things (FSM to the tee). If it wasn't, I'd have the same issue with the stock cam. There's something happening here that's out of the ordinary that I'm missing. Since the issue is isolated to only one cylinder, and the cam is not bent, my attention has turned to the #4 HLA not working properly. My theory is it's not getting enough oil pressure to release the check ball inside, thus not adjusting the rocker down to the proper height. Once I get another chance I'm going to blow some air through the oil port in the head and see what happens. I doubt it's the oil pump since the other 3 HLA's seem to be working fine.

i would think if it was a problem with the head or HLA it would do it with the stock cam aswell tho?

I think what may be happening is the HLA check ball isn't opening because the S3 cam is compressing the HLA when it's being bolted down. Remember it's .012" larger than stock. The pressure in the HLA chamber is more than the oil pressure can overcome, so it never decompresses (ie. adjusts itself). The stock cam base circle is slightly smaller so there's not as much HLA chamber pressure and it opens. That's my current theory, anyways.

This is a good writeup/picture of how the checkball operates: HLA Theory of operation

Re-install and rotate engine by hand a few revolutions and see what is happening afterwards? I never used to rotate my engine after a cam install. Now, I do all the time.

I rotated it a few cycles after i installed it. i also rotated when i was testing for valve leak. That's how i discovered the valves where open on the compression/power stroke.

Curses. I am still highly interested in what is wrong.
