use a ruler or something to draw some straight lines on a piece of paper bein sure to space the lines evenly all the way across, then place the cam over the lines an rotate it or something.. maybe use the cam caps to hole it up.

just an idea.

Ive never seen that with any set of JWT cams. If you are certain that everything else is right you could just reshim that valve. Either get a shim set or grind down the shim until you get the proper valve clearance. Not a hard process, just gotta take your time with it.
Check the clearance on all the others as well from #1 to #3, if the clearance gets tighter as you go down the line then there may be something wrong with the head or cam.


I was under the impression that the shim is there to even up the 2 valves in relation to each other. In other words, to make sure they open and close at the same time and to keep the 2 rocker arms on the same plane. I don't really think Nissan intended the discs to be used as the adjustment device for the rocker to lobe clearance. Hence, why the slotted disc is only made in 1 size. My understanding is that the lifter is suppose to perform that function. Not to say what you're proposing won't fix my issue, however. I just get a little leary about "fudging" things. Especially when it comes to motor internals. Maybe I'm just a little more conservative than you. Thanks for your input, though. I do appreciate it.

I think my next move is to check the lifter/lifter hole again. If all checks out well, I'm gonna punt and put the stocker exhaust cam back in and see what happens. Anybody see an issue firing up a lowport with a S3 intake cam combined with a stock exhaust cam? It will save me a little time if i can do that.

It will sound weird as heck with the change of airflow in and out. It is so easy to change the intake cam. Since you have to change the exhaust cam anyway, why not do both? This would introduce a third scenario and not eliminate other variables. I am still interested as all heck as to what is wrong.

This sounds alot like what happenned to my DE that I swapped in the NX.
I hate to hear you are having these probs,Hank...but at the same time ,I am interested to see the outcome of this.

I have nothing to add to try to help,sorry.

The intake doesn't have the slot for the dizzy. So, no.

be sure to push the plunger of the HLA down sometimes they stick up and wont compress and cause similar problems. Also with the stock cams did you do a leakdown test bc when I had a valve job done I had one valve not seated correctly and I would hav never known without doing a leakdown test bc the motor seemed to run fine.

Umm, I was under the impression, per the FSM (EM-46/47), that the HLA's, aka. lifters, are designed not to compress when the motor is off. If you look in the EM section that covers bleeding them, it states if they move more than a mm., they should be bled until they are solid.

I did not do a leak down or a compression test before the cam install. It is possible it was low compression but not low enough to give it the Subbie sound. The plan is to back out the changes (cams) one by one and see what's the culprit.
