I'm old and out-of-touch because I have no idea what the Honda crowd is doing, or what wheels are....ahem...."played out." Thee only thing I pay attention to is whether I would like them or not, and if they suit my purposes and intentions. Maybe if I was 20-years younger and more in touch with "the scene"? 
I look at them, they are a classic 5-spoke design, lightweight, reasonably strong, affordable and...I like them.
Interesting your impression on the 949 owner. I definitely vote with my dollars. If I think I will not get along with the vendor, then fuck it, no way I'm gonna drop coin with them. I'm too interested in both parties being happy with any given deal, before, during and after any sale.
