I had a similar problem. It ended up being the clutch was completely shot and the rivets that hold the disc on were getting stuck to the pressure plate, being stuck it would not disengage. While I am unsure of this method the test I used to see if the clutch was gone was to put the car in 5th gear and engage the clutch at a high RPM (4-5k). If the car immediately stalls your clutch is good. If it does not stall within a second the clutch id gone and needs to be replaced. Good luck.
What happens is there is still pressure on the clutch however yes it does grind.. broken fork, spring pop and tob are all possibilities but i wont be able to know until i can pull it when i get home...

The clutch is new, maybe 1k miles on it... a valeo stocker... The way im starting in 1st is by putting it in 1st and starting the car then clutchless shifting... So it does hold

Wow, can't say I would do that, but good luck to you man! It is a hell of a gamble. I guess though, whatever distance you can cover is less on the old tow bill if it comes to that.
Well so far so good, thank God... Im 200 miles in.... Had to stop twice because traffic.... It handled thr grapevine at least... I looked inside the tranny and saw nothing in there.... Curious as to what happened
