i followed the link and you are talking about a diagnostic cable correct? I would be fine with getting one but it looks as though there are some pretty specific computer requirements for the software :/ ....and i pulled the plug while the car was running and the fans were on and the fans continued to run? what does this mean?

I have used the cable on xp,vista, windows 7. it works with everything. if the fans are still on then the harness may be shorted. The fans get ground from the ecu to turn on. I need to look at which pin completes the circuit. You did label all the connectors when you pulled the motor right?

yes I did label them.. and the closest one to that plug is another two wire one close to the same but there is an indent in it that is offset so that it will only plug to that one sensor under the intake mani... sorry im ignorant as to the name of that sensor.

back to the diagnostics cable.. do I just need to order the cable itself and then I will be able to acquire the software once I have the cable or would I need to buy that separately?

never mind. if i read correct it looks like about $200 including shipping for the cable and software

I got the program for free when I ordered the cable. looks like you can still download a beta version for free.

okay.. ill probably go ahead and fork out the money later today and pick it up. If this nissan is the same as a honda, that two wire switch is not a closed circuit until that sensor reads the correct temp and then it closes the circuit which cuts the fans on.. like on a honda i can unplug the same sensor and use a jumper wire to complete the circuit on the wiring harness plug and it will kick the fans on and diagnose a bad sensor.. so if this is the same shouldnt me unplugging it from the sensor kill the fans? is that why you think I have a short in the harness?

because the fans are switched ground. so when the harness is frayed or shorted it completes the circuit and the fans come on. This will happen as long as the 12 volt wire is intact. which in your case it is. It also could be the fan relay. All of this can be determined really quick with data scan since you can turn the cooling fans on and off from the software.

I know I have run into this before but can't remember how I fixed it

lol im thinking if i can find the pinout at the ecu for the fans then i can run a wire from that to the sensor and the other wire from the sensor to a 12v power and it should work like its supposed to.. maybe my theory is off though lol

the reason i dont think its the relay(s) is because there is a different relay for each fan and since they are both on constantly I just dont see why both would go bad over the course of swapping an engine
