rev limiter Q's
ok so i bought my 96 200sx se-r about 2 years ago, when I bought it the tach wouldn't push past 6500rpm I thought it was a rev limiter cause it acted just like one. Then after I found this site i found out the rev limiter should be at 7000 rpm. After some much needed maint, (spark plugs and wires fuel filter ect) I could push the tach past 6500 and even 7000 rpm with out the rev limiter kicking in. Then the other day I ran her hard and noticed that the rev limit is now 7800 rpm WTF! any ideas

You have something wrong with either your tach or something in your car... B14 Rev limit = 7000RPM
B13's will read around 7750RPM or so.

If you had a late P10 ecu you could rev to around 7600 or so.

Yeah its wierd, the tach seems to work fine, doesn't skip or jump and no hesitation. The car runs strong pulls hard through all gears, no codes. could it possibly have a tuned ecu? Like I said the car is running stronger than it did 2 yrs ago so I'm not to worried about it just thought I would see if anyone has heard of this.

Almost positive your tach is off. I had the same problem in one my b13's. At WOT it would suddenly hit the fuel cut showing 6600ish but as Daryl said it should show 7750. It was actually hitting 7750, but the tach just stopped keeping up or something.

Also, in my current B14, once in awhile the tach will go all the way to 9000rpms but there's no way its actually going that high.

Only way to know for sure is to get a consult and rev and see where it hits at, or get an aftermarket gauge pillar tach or something.

BTW to answer your other question its very unlikely anyone would tune an ECU in an SR20 to have a lower fuel cut, especially in the B14 which was already too low from the factory.

Question is why are you running it up to the rev limiter? Unless you have a "built" motor (not talking bolt-on's) peak HP is around 6400-6600 rpms and HP starts to drop after this peak.

It also means that if you run it up to say 7500, then shift into the next gear, you may land in that gear with the engine revs above peak torque.

Rule of thumb: Don't shift past redline and hit the next gear right in the "torque meat". For a stock SR20 that's around 4000.
