Thread: Car wont start

Well, I just had the alternator replaced while I was on a trip 2 months ago. It could be, but probably isn't that.

I'll give it a push start when one of my roommates comes home and I'll be able to find out for sure what this is...

I'm going to take the DE starter from my G20 and put it in my VE for the time being and see if that works.

What wires am I bypassing, or trying to?

So I'm just leaving advance auto. Tested the starter. It's a good unit. Which is not good news for me because now I'm stumped...

This is what the ignition switch looks like.. put the ignition to on and see if you can run a jumper wire to start the car.. I can't remember right now which wires you need to touch so if someone could please help out with that?

If it isn't clicking and it tested good, you've got wiring somewhere...whether it be the ignition switch, the clutch or neutral safety, alarm relay going fritzy, or some broken or shorted wire in between all this. A bad or siezed alternator would not cause the starter to not try and engage. Hell, you can completely disconnect the alternator if it makes you feel better.

I'm guessing ignition switch. Same thing happened to me a few years ago and even took it to the local Nissan dealer who thought it may have been a bad starter. Not. Car left me stranded a few times and while in Colorado it happened again. A dealership there found the issue in the switch that they replaced for an arm and a leg. Similar issue happened on my 87 Hardbody, replaced starter and still didn't start. Replaced ignition switch myself and problem solved. Definitely check the neutral safety switch and the fuse,fusible link & relay box located near the battery. Make sure all are good.

If you take out the ignition switch, its not very hard to take apart and look at it.. You can see exactly which wires are the ones to start it, Can't hurt to try it

Ignition switch is also cheap and probably one of the easiest things on the car to replace. I've had several go bad on me as well.

This is more than likely the problem. Replace this next!

Well let me tell you what happened to my car - at a stoplight while driving, the car stalled. Would not start up again. I even tried to push start it, had help rolling it down hill to prob like 20mph, popped the clutch in 2nd gear, and it stopped the car dead in it's tracks when the clutch was released. Still dead. Got it towed to a shop and the alternator was seized up. New alternator and all good
