Doesn't engine breaking wear out the clutch faster?

Ha this old debate again.. the short answer is no one really knows which is better, neutral coasting or in gear, for the overall longevity of the car and its moving parts..

Accelerating puts the same amount of stress on the car, sooo to save your clutch don't drive

Across the last 20k miles I've logged I've been averaging 27.244mpg, with a best of 31.843 mpg. Car has 234k as of yesterday on the original engine so I think it's doing pretty good, it does burn ~2qts of oil every 4k so it's probably time for a rebuild. The most miles I've pushed was 353 and I put 12.252 gal in it. I do not drive this car easy, I'm sure I could average another 2-3mpg per tank if I did

My engine has 285k miles doesn't burn oil but does Hog a bit more gas than usual about 26-27 A/C on and 28-29 ac off.. And driving it easy since I don't wanna blow this high mileage engine..

Here's what I never got. If you are sitting in your driveway holding at 3K rpm, and take your foot off the gas, the car idles. Air is cut down to idle air, the MAF reacts to that, injectors supply idle amout of gas to match idle air for an idle mixture, and the engine revs down until it reaches idle RPM. So if you do the same while driving, whether in gear or not, why would it be any different?

The injectors are supplying enough fuel for idle as the air supply with your foot off the gas is for idle. It doesn't care how fast you're going, doesn't care if your clutch is in or not, it's just going to supply gas to match the incoming air. It simply engine brakes until you get to idle RPM since that's all the power it's making at that throttle location.

The only true way to conserve is to turn off the ignition when coming to a stop. Nobody's going to do that.

i guess you dont drive around with a wideband?? lol. the injectors get cut an afr goes full lean until about 1500 rpm, usually by 2500 i've already clutched in an am almost stopped.

Nope, never had a reason to do a wideband. What criteria would a regular car use to decide when to cut injectors though?
