Thread: Failed Cali smog test today

This is what I am hoping for. Drive the car around for a long time. Some high rpm runs and straight to the smog shop. This time i'm going in a little later, and i'm letting the car idle until it's my time to test. I swear those guys want you to fail.


For real man. I'm getting tired of California. Thinking about moving out to Arizona.

Throw a little more timing into it, not a lot because you don't have too much room on NOx left. But just 2-3 degrees. And maybe a a step colder plugs.

I was thinking about using ngk platinum laser. My old z32 had a hard time passing smog and those laser plugs took the emissions way down.

How many miles on the current cat?
Make sure the cat is nice and hot when you go and if they can't test your car right away, either come back later or let your car run while you wait. Rev it up to 4K and hold there for at least 30 seconds. This was the trick the tech used on my P10...with a hot and functioning cat the VE passed with flying colors. Make sure you plugs are good along with a the PVC valve. Also an oil change before the test helps.

btw, how big was the smog tech? lol. That test weight looks way too high for a B14. If their scale is off it and throw off the test. You should bring that to their attention.

I think the cat is original, 136,000 miles on it. I'm changing the plugs before the re test, oil was changed last Friday, I ordered a new PCV valve today from Nissan. If I can get one more pass out of this car, i'll be very happy. I can then save up for a new cat and o2 sensors. I'm sure I need it, just don't have the money for it right now. The guy testing the car didn't look very big. He looked to be around 5'10, no more than 200 pounds.

They did the same thing to mine as yours saying its a 1.6

Looks like it's a Bosch sensor. It was installed by a shop for the previous owner in 2004 at 89,422. So the current sensors have about 47000 on them.

Do you guys know anything about these sensor?

It's only going to get worse. it started in California and spread like a disease elsewhere. In all forms, not just the automotive world.
