Thread: Failed Cali smog test today

My HC at 15 mph is a little high, about 20 over the maximum allowable. This sucks the big one. Do I need new o2 sensors? New cat? Please god not a new cat. I don't have the money for that right now.

New Cat and take it off when your done testing and reinstall it in two yrs before your next test.....

Guess i'm f*&ked then. I can't afford a new cat right now. Especially a California approved catalytic converter.

I'm going to finish up this full tank of gas, I just put in a bottle of that guaranteed to pass emissions stuff. Then i'll fill up again. Change the pcv valve and the spark plugs. Then run the car on the freeway at 4,000 rpms, then take it in for the retest. If it fails again, i'll either place the car on non op status, or sell it. Probably out of state.

Can you sell a vehicle in Cali that has failed smog?
I'm thinking it failed because the smog guy let my car sit while he calibrated the smog machine. That was about 15 to 20 min. My cat may be on the way out but I think I can get one more pass out of it. My numbers aren't that bad, at least I don't think so.

What were your numbers? Just curious.

Those numbers look similar to mine when my car failed smog in June. I drove the car to the smog station, which was like 3 miles away, tested it, and it failed. The tecnician told me the cat needs to be very hot to work best. So two days later, I drove to the bank first, then to the smog station. I was on the road for over an hour. Car was nice and hot. It passed with flying colors.
