Put simply, Nissan was willing to sacrifice a little smoothness for a little torque.

Honda was willing to sacrifice a little torque for smoothness.

Someone should find the engineer's white papers and compare the two companys' goals. I know the SR20 white papers are floating in a thread around here somewhere.

yes, it seems as if the VE's are designed more like the Vtec motors...that was my suspicion and from many accounts, it seems like it is true. It seems like the DE is built to lower tolerances(mass manufacturing style) and doesn't feel as smooth.

as far as the newbie comments, I don't mind em, but the "y0, my sR20 shmokes vTeC Honduhs all day,cuz da Honduhs got no torque and R slow" comments get fukn redundant. at least think of something original if you're going for a laugh

What's so wrong with being such a fanboy though? I'm as ignorant as you can get regarding Hondas and their engine tech (reading this thread has been fascinating, although I fear I'll forget it all in the next 5 minutes) - but that doesn't stop me from joining in the "teh Honda sux0r" ranting because for me it's all part of the loyalty and for me that's what it is. At the end of the day, it's *nice* to know where the technical strengths and weaknesses are in the SR and wider nissan family BUT I love and squeeze Nissan no matter what (and I mean, no matter what!)

Re: high revving, I had my throttle jammed open the other day as I was scrubbing the T/B and started it up forgetting about this - well did it rev all right! But it was a smooth (although loud) revving sound with no "OMG it sounds like something is smashing itself to pieces in there" sound effects. Then the computer realised the MAF wasn't there and put a stop to the high revving madness.....

While it's certainly good and admirable to be truly passionate about something, being loyal to it "no matter what" is called blind faith and can be considered fanaticism. That is saying that you'll follow no matter what, even if the company puts out inferior products..you'll put money in their pocket..encouraging them not to progress. This is the same mentality that has kept GM on top..because so many people blindly put faith in their products even if 90% of them have been pure trash for the past 35 or so years.

I'm trying not to go off on a rant and maybe this has gotten borderline technical for some people (this was like a normal-esque topic in the forum few years ago) but at least learn the strong points of your opponents, it's like playing defense in sports...if you don't know your opponents weak and strong points, how are you going to beat them?

Like I said, I rev it to redline A LOT. If you've never had experience with the Honda motors I mentioned, everything will be fine and dandy in your little world
and you will not realize how much better it can be...I guess like they say..ignorance is bliss (not calling you ignorant, btw).

just get S4 cams, i have s4's, pr cai, crank and w/p pullies and my engine flies to redline. its not harsh just loud and smooth. i think if i get a lightweight flywheel (thinking about oem sr16 flywheel) itll rev even faster

You want to feel good about the smoothness of the SR20? Go rev a 90s GM Quad 4 or even a late 90s Subaru 4cyl.

My 98 Legacy GT has tons of torque, but its as rough as a Jeep.

anything on the rotation assembly that is lighter than stock is going to obviously lighten up the rotation mass and make reving easier and faster, ie: flywheel, crank pullies, alt pullies, water pump pullies, power steering pullies ect

Torque has nothing to do with smoothness... There are 8,000 hp - 4,500 tq supercharged big block V8's that are just as smooth as a 300 hp/tq engine.

Revhappy you have to compare a VE to a B and a DE to a LS, I think there is something wrong with your motor. I never had a problem bouncing off the rev limiter on a SR or a GA its smooth to me but then again I like solid engine mounts

OK...that much torque out of an NA late-90s 4 cylinder motor, more specifically.
