does the compression test show a leaking HG?

what other methodologies to test for a leaking HG

A comp test will show a head gasket if the leak is big enough between cylinders. You need to heat cycle the motor first before the head gasket will make a complete seal.

its been driven. having cooling issues, hence the topic

I would do a comp test then.

Some basic instructions. The article says to warm the motor but you can also do the test cold.

If you know anyone with one of these it works good ...
It detects co2 in the coolant vapors . I love it best tool i bought for diag leaky hg's . This was on a hemi ram 1500 bad hgs ..

From my experience with assembling many many sr20's the final torque numbers on stock headbolts are probably between 80-90 ft-lbs. But they are not meant to be set to a torque besides the torque prior to the 90*+90* procedure. Thats what they determined to get the proper stretch on the bolt.

If your not having any problems with it I would just roll with it if the motor is already completely back together. If it isnt then I would take the time to remove the bolts, check the length and then reassemble.

As for a compression test, Unless the leak is huge it usually wont show up on a compression test. You will know by the motor putting combustion gases into the cooling system resulting in overheating and air in the system. Severely messed up gaskets will get coolant into the cylinders and/or into the oil.

^ Ha ha the good old 1.8 ! think ive done atleast 10 hg jods on those . The co2 tester is geat for small leaks .

hey

in the process of purchasing another HG. will a larger diameter HG (say 88mm) have sealing problems with a 86mm piston setup?

I am trying to effectively lower the compression ratio.

thanks

Yes you will have issues if you use a 88mm on a 86mm piston will not seal properly
and that will not lower your compression

if you want to lower your compression ration buy a thicker head gasket.
