Thread: Overheat at 175k ofc

I have searched.

Situation:

2nd gear and I'm throttling 50%, then there's this noticeable loss of power, my temp gauge then hits HOT! I pull at an exit and let the car cool down. My warm idle is now colder than usual.

No coolant puking. I don't suspect any leaks or bad sensors.

What could be wrong? I don't need a blown head gasket right now.

mods are:
I/E 19degree timing on 91 oct w/ oct booster

Do a compression check to insure there is no damage to the cylinders.. You need to find the cause of why your car is overheating. Headgasket = smoke out exhaust (if its bad enough) or bubbles from the radiator cap at idle... Thermostat is easy to check and cheap to replace.
What do you mean by your warm idle is now colder?
Did you check your coolant level after you overheated to see if you actually even had anything in it?

Temp gauge used to rise to 2/5 at warm idle, now it's 1/4.



Yeah, had a good amount in there and didn't seem to bubble.

replace the t-stat first

Pull out the t-stat to see if that helps, then test it in some water to make sure it is opening at the right temp.

It's more than possible the tstat is stuck open causing you not to be able to get to normal operating temp.

Yeah, but since he overheated first, I'd think it wouldn't be stuck open?

Thanks for bringing that up. Will the ''defective'' thermostat effect at all loss of power, then it hitting hot?

Edit: This started occuring two nights after a 2 hr-long cruise night, which I hadn't overheat.

A failing one could get stuck and unstuck possibly lol

are you sure you got all the air bubbles out?
