Thread: Completely messing up my rebuild

I span a bearing a while back and have since pulled the engine out, apart and started rebuilding after getting crank resurfaced and new bearings.

It seems recently every time I touch my engine I manage to screw something else up.

I installed 2 pistons, both the wrong way round, so when I checked the assembly span freely I broke 2 oil squirters (got 2 new ones on the way)

So when I took it all back apart to replace them I noticed some of my brand new acl race bearings had scratches on them.







Is this normal or should I be looking to buy new ones again?

The crank must have been turned over 5 or 6 times maximum! Manually

Little scratches wont hurt any. Make sure they are clean next time though

I'm now thinking about stripping the block and getting it properly cleaned, also killing two birds with one stone I could get the deck re surfaced for a metal hg

Yeah get the block cleaned and resurfaced. It'll make everything easier. I slacked and didn't the second time I used my cometic and it didn't seal right. If your not gonna get tye block anx head cleaned you need to use aj oem style gasket since they are better at sealing even wity slight imperfections

Yeah those small scratches wont hurt anything. All it takes is the smallest dirt specs to do that. No big deal. If your gonna do it, just hot tank it and clean it all out with cleaner just before assembly. Thats what i do with all the motors I build. Just run cleaner through all the oil passages and clean all parts really well before assembly. I should buy stock in Autozone Brake Cleaner because Ive literally gone through about 2 cases of 12 during this build.

I personlay Use the "brakekleen" in red can as some brake cleaners can promote rust on certain metals but they can be cleaned off right away and oiled . And ive heard some can soak into the metals but not sure how true that is.

could you give me a quick overview of which passages on the block to hit with the brake-cleaner?

Im not so familiar with the layout but i dont mind selecting a few locations and just blasting the cleaner through the galleys. Where do i start?

(in my case the block is still in the bay and the head is still on)

What are you using for assembly lube?
