200sx SE-R Bad Grinding Sound
It all started with my passenger side axle nut coming loose, the nut was rubbing on the rotor and scratched the hell out of it pretty bad, I checked the other side and the driver side axle nut was loose but hadn't completely come off the axle yet, tightened both down and put new cotter pins in and the grinding sound went away for a while but then a couple days later I noticed this squeaking sound coming from the passenger side tire in rhythm with the wheel turning, so I started to think it was brakes or wheel bearing. The squeaking got much worse and then turned into a thudding sound on the driver side that would come and go, I just replaced the front brakes with brand new rotors (I have ad22vf calipers so I got NX2K rotors and pads, there were 2 different options when I ordered them from autozone, 257mm and 250mm, I got the 257mm diameter ones, they seem to be the same size as the ones I pulled off) and the grinding sound seems to be much worse now? Below are videos of the tire off while the car is on jack stands with the car in fifth, the sound is somewhat intermittent (changes and sometimes disappears from one side briefly if you turn the wheel) but it is getting worse and you can hear it the worst when you slow down, it sounds absolutely TERRIBLE and I can't see anything rubbing or anything?

I ordered a new driver side cv axle (passenger side is fairly new) and wheel bearings so hopefully one of the two or both will fix the issue but I can't see anything that would indicate that these need to be replaced other than the horrifying grinding sound that the car is making! The only thing I could think of is that the axles became loose after the nuts backed themselves out of the end of the splines but I swapped out the driver side steering knuckle with my B13 I'm working on right now because I thought the wheel bearing was bad, when I did that the spindle popped off the hub and the bearing looked like it was in bad shape... I have no idea what the hell is going on but this is driving me absolutely crazy...

This is with the car on jack stands and with the car in fifth gear without the wheel on (driver side)

This is in the car driving around my block

Running the car with the axle nuts loose ruined the wheel bearings. They must be more than "snug". They need to be torqued to spec.

That makes sense, I'll make sure their torqued when I replace Driver side CV today. I'll update this thread with my progress when I get everything back in!

If you think that is what those sounds are coming from then it gives me hope that they'll go away when I get the new bearings pressed in. Noob question I know but I read somewhere that it's only 1 bearing per wheel and 2 seals? I thought it was 2 bearings per wheel?

Im having that problem now too..exact same thing happened..driver side axle nut was loose...dont know how...and have the exact same sound now...when I tightened the nut it went away for a bit..but came back and is just getting worse...

I also suspect that my hub could be slightly bent though..

I suspected wheel bearing immediately after I fixed the other issue, my concern is that it happened to both sides and it somewhat intermittent, I'll know for sure after I get the new bearings pressed in on Saturday

Have you changed the bearing yet? If you haven't I changed mine...the sounds gone completely..at least for now..just gonna watch it and see. upon looking at the hub again..I forgot how beefy the walls of that thing are...I dont think bending is a possibility..

I got the knuckles off and I'm gonna drop them off with the new bearings and seals to the shop tomorrow, after I get off work I'll put them on and post an update. I also have a new driver side CV to put on so that should eliminate any possible sounds like that from the front end. Fingers crossed!
