Thread: Need some help, i've got a lot of play in my shifter

I changed my shifter for a TWM one

My problem is here with the shifter arm, the one where the shifter bolts, at the other end(at the transmission) there is a bushing there or something that is very worn and soft. I can see it by moving the shifter are underneath.

When i'm in gears it has like 2-3 inch of play (left to right / right to left).

What do you guys think?

Anybody changed that bushing or has problems with this?? Not the one on the second pic.

also bought this but didn't install yet (doesn't seem to be soft or anything, this is not where my problem is) the arm i'm talking about is at the right of that one, we dont see it on the pic

I think you can only use the 7-1103G. It ONLY replaces the bushings on the strut that ties the gear shifter mounting plate to the tranny, it doesn't do anything to the bushings that are on the rod that actually does the shifting.

The control rod (the part that actually does the shifting) you have to buy from Nissan since there are two joints that are riveted and welded - not replaceable by the end user. I think I paid $36 for this from Scottdale Infiniti. Nissan pn 34103-53J00

edit: imo the 7-1103G bushing is a waste of time and money, most people who changed just that bushing didn't see any differences.

the problem is with the arm on the last pic #34103-53J00

the bushing on the first pic made a BIG difference though

if ur talking about the shifter arm not the stabelizer bar then i'd just find a bushing that is close and press it in.....you could try gspec and see if he can get you that oem bushing as well

I've never seen that particular part fail (that doesn't mean it can't) so I have no experience replacing it. However, Greg Vogel at Gspec would be my first stop to try and see if he could find that part for sale all alone without having to buy a new shifter rod.

That part is a strange piece, since it is more of a plastic/Teflon sleeve than anything else. You could potentially replace it yourself with a Teflon sleeve from a local hardware store and a little Dremel action or something.

You want to eliminate the play in your shifter? My short shifter was full of side-to-side slop. Not any more! On the right is the new control rod installed. The gray barrel dead center of the pic had a bushing that had deteriorated allowing the control rod to "rock" on the connecting bolt side to side - thus the "slop" on the shifter. There is no replacement bushing available, you have to replace the whole rod which goes back to the bottom of the shifter. Nissan part 34103-53J00 "Rod Assembly"– list $44.76, w/ SE-R discount $33.57. On the left you can see the Energy Suspension bushing installed on the support rod (Energy Suspension / Courtesy Nissan part # 7-1103 List $7.30 – cheap!). I can not tell you how much of a difference this had on the shifter. It was like night and day. The shifter feel is so positive and direct, notchy and precise. I catch myself waiting a half a second to make sure I’m in gear before letting out the clutch (the throws are so short and tight)! "As close as you can get to a race car..." as the Courtesy Nissan mechanic put it. It is the best money spent on the car in quite a while because I can enjoy the upgrade 50 times a day just driving around and it is a very easy install compared to the suspension.

on b14,p10,b13 the bushing itself shown on the picture above cannot be removed unless you grind down the pin that holds it on the rod and replace the pin with a bolt and nut.

p11's have it removable... i recently found one at the junk yard and put it on my p10 and yes night and day difference no more slop!

I replaced mine without doing any of that madness. Maybe I had to remove my cross-member to do it? I don't remember, it was so long ago. I don't remember doing anything special to install it though.

I remember now...

That whole bushing housing can come off with two 12mm nuts. Lol at having to grind out the stud and replace with a bolt. Just remove the damn bracket. Two 12mm nuts and you're done.

I need to try this. I have a little side to side "slop" and some front to back too. Do you think this will help the latter as well?
