This will work for a while, but the extra stress will make that end of the hose split open and dump gas every time you fill it up. I put on my baller hat and got the Nissan hose, but you could try using a 5/8 to 1/2 barbed hose fitting plus some good worm-type clamps to join the 9/16 and 5/16 hoses.

Yeah, probably in extreme circumstances, but this is just an 1/8". I think he'd be OK.

Yes I think your method is good. His method spreads out the load to 1/16" on 4 hose ends rather than 1/8" on two ends. It will probably last and still save you $20 over the OEM part (or more if you can raid your spare parts bin)
