Thread: Headgaskets to bump compression

I noticed the H-boys use thicker or smaller multi-layer head gaskets to either raise or lower compression. What's the thinnest gasket that we can use with out getting into valve to piston contact and what compression would it bump a 9:5.1 sr20de to? After witnessing the thinnest headgasket just go on a H22 build and run completely fine, I need to ask this question.

all the work, id just slap in a set of high comp pistons, easier wich much more noticable gains.

i think the thinnest ive seen available is .5mm i dont think you will hit the valves with that at all unless you have some crazy cams, i mean most aftermarket cams offer lift that is way more that .5mm over stock and they have no issues with hitting the pistons

Skip the HG and just use some RTV.

I'm sort of looking at this from a cost effective route as well because let's say you pick up a nice set of pistons for $450 and pay someone to install them for $200.....$680 by the time their shipped in to you Vs $325 for a new gasket and headstuds combo. That's a big price difference if you just want a minimal bump in compression.

I believe the thinnest one I have seen is a stock ve one but I could be wrong.

That is a 3 layer metal head gasket correct? Let's say if I wanted the De to go from 9.5:1 to 10.0:1. Would it be possible to raise the compression that high just from a exchange of the head gasket?

you'd probaby have to shave the head or deck the block to get that much rise from compression.. Then get a chain or tensioner made to get rid of the slack.
