If EGR is creating a misfire at idle there is more than likely a leak at the EGR valve allowing EGR by when it should be closed. Sometimes a good cleaning can rejuvenate the valve. Always, high quality maintenance will eliminate the problem without resorting to tweaking something that doesn't need to be.

As a side note, EGR gained a bad rep in the late 60's early 70's when first installed and systems were sometimes valve incorrectly as per drivability, and instead manufacturers preferred to err towards emissions. Surging, very noticeable part-throttle issues, and substantial pinging were all factors that were part of new and improperly tuned cars that set many peoples minds forever against it. A modern, well set-up and functioning EGR is virtually not a problem at all. If you are seeing a problem that EGR seems to be involved with it's probably another part of the system that is causing it, not just the fact that the system is plumbed into the combustion chamber. The young people driving and working on cars today have it easy compared to the mess of hoses and lack of information of 20-30 years ago on carb'ed vehicles.

Again, EGR was specifically designed for cars that were idling alot in traffic. I've cleaned solenoids and it doesn't last long for some cars. I have a 03 crown vic with 35,000 miles and the egr solenoid has clogged up with the 2nd valve installed. WHy deal with it when you can remove it and not worry about the solenoid design flaws causing malfunctions. Plus, since my car is turbocharged I didn't go through a welding ordeal to plumb the line. Kids do not have it easier today than previously. If you think a carb'd v8 or such is harder to work on you need help.

And if you think trying to understand the "mystery box" of hoses on Hondas of the 80's is easier than the simple plumbing on todays injected four's, you are the one that needs help. And finding the information on understanding and repairing EGR systems properly in the 70's was NOT a simple task, unless you had connections. Tell me in what way the EGR system on a carbed V8 is grossly simpler than the EGR on a SR20? A bit simpler, yes. But the difference in accessing gigabytes of info on servicing any system on todays cars for a few minutes of net cruising vs paying hard earned money for a manual that almost any back yard tinker can find mistakes in, far outweighs the small amount of plumbing simplicity. See where I'm coming from here?
Nobody said anything about a simple carb'ed, pushrod engine design being more complicated. The topic here is EGR. And quite a few carb'ed V8 back then had a lot more complicated EGR system vacuum schematic than we do now.

"I've cleaned solenoids and it doesn't last long for some cars. "
I never said modern systems are completely failproof. The example I gave of known EGR problems in my mind all came from American examples. I don't remember one model or brand in particular that had a bad rep., that was an import. May be a good example of one, but nothing comes to mind. But, the EGR system on SR20's works real well.

i just did the egr delete and well see how good my gas milege is....i just put 4.75 gallons in and will let you know the outcome......

i noticed after it was removed the car seemed to drive better......and it coasts and deaccelerates smoother, and feels nicer driving in 5th gear for some reason

......but befrore i removed the system...i forgot to cap off the egr pipe that goes from the headers (4th primary?)to intake mani cuasing unmetered air to eneter the motor!!!!!

so now its gone.....

i had a 91 xe with the all might ga16de motor , no egr hooked up and this was while we still had testing ....it ran so clean they had to test it twice!! it ran cleaner than a new one!......
i had 93 octane in it and had taken it for a little run on the high way to make sure everything was nice and warmed up before heading to the test facility.......so i am a believer in that removal of it as i have in all of my nissans(mainly b13s with either ga or sr20s in them) ...jmtc sorry for trolling i was looking for some info and came across this thread.....lol

Holy 2 year old thread batman. Also please ignore my first page responses. I didn't know anything back then, but I'm not going to edit them now (for the sake of continuity).
