B15 Transmission
We are trying to reassemble the transmission and ran into this issue. We are putting in the rod for the 3rd and 4th gear and it has 1 indent on one side and 3 on the other. Which side should face the check spring? The side with 1 or 3?

The side with 3 goes towards the outside of the case. 1st picture is correct. The way that works is when that gear is selected the flat surface pushes the pins into the other shafts so that they cannot be selected. The 3 indents are just to have the check ball and spring pressure both in neutral or in gear to help hold it in place.

So the 3 indents face the spring, ehich makes it picture 2 being correct? Just making sure we do it right the first time. Thanks a lot.

The top picture is right. Also the orientation of the top of the shaft would be facing where the upper check ball goes as well in comparison to the case. Everything will only line up one way.

3 indents towards the spring and check spring bolt thats sticking out of the bellhousing on the left side of the picture.

You will see when you go to put it back together. The upper part of the shaft has indents too if im not mistaken and it will line up correctly with the upper check ball hole when together right. If not it wont.

We put it together that way and it wouldn't shift to third and fourth. When we flipped it, it shifted fine to third and fourth.

Maybe you're thinking about a different rod. There are the 3 rods. The 2 for first and second and fifth gear have the indents on the top. The rod for third and forth has the indents on the bottom only and the slits for the c clips on the top but no indents on the top.

yeah my bad. Again i dont have one in front of me to determine that.

All i know is that when each gear is selected it locks out the rest from going in. So either its going to work or its not which you found out. lol.

Thanks for the help amyway. It would be nice if the fsm had the indents pictured on the rods but it doesn't.
