I wouldnt leave it on the car,if you go with a cheap one.
Back when I mountainbiked alot(over 10 years ago
) I had a Thule on Honda accord for like 3 years, then just bought the mount kit for my Hardbody that replaced the honda. The bars and bike mount was interchangeable.
It was on the Hardbody for 4 years, and held up great.
The expense comes with the mount options.
You gotta piece it together
-Crossbars
-Mounts(feet for the car type)
-Locks to lock the rack to the car(I had these)
-Bike mount rail and wheel holder(each bike)...or skis or whatever.
-Wind Deflector(highly recommended)
-I had to buy a kit that allowed the rack to mount on the cab of the kingcab truck.(same as the kit for small 2 door cars as mentioned by someone else)
-Optional lock to lock my bike on the rack(my bike was expensive)
So...it ended up costing like 500 bucks for one bike locked onto my roof with a wid deflector on my Honda.
When I got the truck it cost like 100- 150 for the stuff to make it work on it.
Its cheaper to put a small hitch on and get a rack to plug into it.
Hitch 100-150 bux max...
Them receiver mount racks are like 50 bucks and hold 3 bikes....plus you dont have to lift the bike onto the roof.
