That is silly, you use a punch and mark where 15 degrees is and retard the timing from there. It doesn't matter if it is an exact 13 degrees or not.

B,

My emissions machine is broken at work otherwise I would help you like I helped Ric.

You going to have to show me this Jim, because I have tried setting timing by eye before and it did not work for me, timing was way off... waaaayyy off, by like 5* lol

yo B why don't you give us a little more info on the car?

is it a ve swap? whats your cruising / idle afr's look like?

double check that o2 sensor.

its funny what can be over looked.. sometimes the simplest of stuff can cause stupid issues.

You need to know if you car is running an O2 sensor or not, have to begin here. Is your check engine light on? What kind of gas mileage are you getting. Last but not least what state do you live in?

I will tell you about it. You of course need to start with with base timing at 15degrees, don't assume put the car in timing mode and verify. You then use a self centering punch and mark the bracket and the distributor itself. If you need to adjust timing (for emissions or other reasons) you just retard or advance it on an as needed basis. The 2 marks will always line exactly at... 15 degrees, unless you have not done the Wayne Cox HP trick but I just assume everyone likes a little extra precision and possibly power.

Ok, that does makes sense, but just I assumed he was doing it off the fly with no procedure attached.

What state do you live in? Before you start throwing money at the problem you gotta start somewhere. I could be that the O2 is bad. Whta kind of mileage are you getting? Poor MPG is a sign of a bad O2 sensor.
