Thread: Unknown SR20DE sound

The sound is a popping, crumbling and clogging noise. It seems to be coming from the BPT / EGR valve area. Thought it was my tranny, but sounds more like it's trying real hard to suck in air but it's clogged. Thought it might've been my iacv/aacv also since I've been having some start-up issues, but that's the other side of the engine, where the noise isn't. This happens on COLDass start-ups and during idle. Imput would be nice, Thanks!

sounds a lot like some serious valvetrain noise to me.

Is this video, in fact a cold start up?

This sounds similar to my 91 SE-R, the first time starting up after installing jwt S3 cams. But the sound dissapeared after the car warmed up and never occured again. So barring an exhaust leak, I would go with Wingman saying it's the valvetrain

P.S. I'd pull the valve cover off and check for sludge. Sludge up top is a good indicator of sludge elsewhere. Make sure you don't ruin the valve cover gasket if you do, or get a new one from Nissan

Yeah, this is a cold start up. I'll have to check inside the valve cover later for sludge.

Update: Lucas Oil'd the car, changed spark plugs/wires and oil change. Still having having start up issues, and this noise.

Maybe the starter hasn't disengaged all the way,and the gear is bouncing around on the flywheel.It would kinda hit the flywheel and pop back and forth.I would think it should quickly disengage after you start it,but it could be old and gummed up and take a while to release all the way.

You may be on to something there. Starter's relatively easy to remove, I'd take it out and inspect/test. Couldn't hurt.

Been caught up with things, so I haven't really got to take a deeper look. All I know is that when I hear the sound when the car is heating up, CLUTCHING will make it go away. I've been ''kind-a'' at peace of mind, but it'll even be better to know what it is and eventually have the time to invest in fixing it! So what could it be?

my car does this same thing, im sure its the transmission since it didnt start this noise until i put this trans on. my last one didnt make this noise but i cracked the case

throw out bearing?

maybe the clutch is adjusted too tight and its gently riding on it and the bearing is shot?
