Thread: Plate missing on transmission exposing flywheel?

Hey,

I notice a place for a plate or cover of some sort to go that's exposing my flywheel to the elements looking at the transmission in the car from the passenger side to the right of the axle. I also notice two, what look like 8 or 10mm holes for bolts to go through which I'm assuming is where this cover bolts to.

I have no idea why that's missing or what I need to cover it up as I can't seem to find the part to cover it up with.

Anyone know what I'm missing?

You could just cut something from some sheet metal and make it work. Seal it if you're paranoid with Grey RTV like me.

Okay, technically that piece goes on the upper oil pan.
What is it? It is a small plate that covers an access hole. The access hole lets you get at two small 10mm nuts that help hold the upper oil pan onto the block. It comes with some velvet type stuff on the edge to help seal the hole, but it's no big deal if that hole is not water and air tight. It just keeps rocks and shit from getting into your flwyheel/clutch situation.

Here is the hole with no plate over it. You can see the two nuts that it gives access to.

Lazy people usually leave this lying in the grass when they do some work...

A lot of cars don't have it in fact most diy-ers don't put it back on and I've owned several cars without it. Its not ideal but you can get bye w/o it.

If something did get in there it would eff stuff up pretty bad. Pretty sure I don't have one on my car right now. You can just cut out a little sheet piece of metal and bolt it on there to cover the space up , that's probably about as much protection as you need. Could even put a little bead of gasket sealer if you are worried about moisture.

i know people that have no plate on there and no issues so far.....i would cover it tho......to easy for crap to fuck up the FW or clutch....i say cover it

and yes there is one stock

I live in the woods and have mice constantly eating nuts in my engine bay. Thus that cover plate is a must for me otherwise I'll be adding some mouse guts to my clutch.
