You tune the same regardless whether internal/external coil. You're probably thinking about tuning a distributor based system vs. a distributorless system (coil on plug).
The only difference is that the external coil can be upgraded (like mentioned above). This is a preferred option for serious tuners as an internal coil distributor may have weaker spark under high load scenarios. Replacing the external coil with a higher current/more powerful coil can overcome weak spark under high load scenarios.
