Thread: Partial tune up today and...

The car doesn't feel like it used to at all. I've always had a stutter around 3200rpm that would go away around 4k, gone. My idle has always been a little wobbly, not bad just a little stutter, gone. Pulls harder than ever, loving it.
I hadn't really done a lot of typical maintenance since I got the car as I was busy fixing little PITAs like the knock sensor, Maf, gas filler neck hose, stupid things. well today I went in to grab some oil for an oil change and saw Quaker state advanced formula full synthetic 5w30 for $1.99 a qt, sweet! Grabbed 4 of them and a fram filter for $11 out the door. Then I decided to go ahead and stop for new plugs. Got the ngk's that were recommended to me here on the dash, and said well probably time for a new fuel filter and definitely time for a new air filter cone. I had a junk rusted eBay cone on there, replaced it with a clean junk auto zone cone. Anyways, the fuel filter was disgusting.. as soon as I pulled the bottom hose from it and the clean gas dropped out, grey yuck started dribbling all over. The cheap auto lite platinum plugs that were in the car when I bought it were not much better.. the tips had a red frosty glaze over them and just looked like complete trash, no even sure how my car was running at all with them...

Anyways, MT90 going in tomorrow, and getting ready to buy a new distributor, valve cover seal, high pressure PS line, etc. Gonna get her back to health before her heart gets ripped out to be thrown into another body, and she goes to the crusher.

At least you had good results I go to change my plug wires yesterday and #2 was filled with oil. Got a new valve cover gasket coming in tomorrow.

What oil weight do you run?

Im in South Florida so it might be different elsewhere, I ran 10w40 when n/a, currently 20w50 now that Im on boost. Anything thinner and it gets like water on the dyno, track, street.

Did you check the distributor cap & rotor?
When the contacts inside get corroded, you won't get a good spark.
One time on my '91 se-r, it was so bad, it would barely rev to 4000ish RPM.

I use 0w30 Mobil full synthetic in my daily drivers.

I run 5w30 because it is what is recommended for our cars from the factory. I ran 10w30 through one change and for some reason felt like my car just didnt like it as much as the 5. Plus I'm still in Illinois til the end of the month and were still seeing random temp drops. I may try 10 again when I'm back in Florida next month.

Yeah valve cover gaskets are ordered for me too. I didn't have any major oil in there but did have a small amount of residue on plugs 3&4. I believe it was more likely from the plug not being torqued in well for the past who knows how long they've been in there rather than an actual leak but i want to clean and paint my VC anyways.

Cap and rotor and possibly the entire distributor will be replaced this week.. I have a slight leak at the o ring from the dizzy and though I can't visibly find the crack I believe there is a crack in my cap somewhere because very wet days I get sputtering until the car has warmed up for about 10 minutes.

Replacing that O-ring on the dizzy should fix the problem. Very common issue on our engines. Glad your car is feeling that much better! Between this and the new tires, your car must feel completely different in only about a week. I'm sure you're loving it!
