Maxima final drive in a Spec V 6 speed
Planning on a 6 speed swap in my B13. I want to use the 02-03 Maxima 3.812 final drive gear in a 04-06 Spec-v 6speed and need to know what parts I'll need other than the ring gear itself.

I've been all over the web and have seen all kinds of posts that go from listing just the ring gear to a list that includes main shafts and side bearings, etc.

It seems every where I go zer099 has been there before and already ask the questions without a clear answer. (he must of researched every Nissan forum in existence as far back as 2008)

Anyway, the best info I found that it can be done has been a post by zer099 on this forum. He has an 04 6 speed with the maxima 3.812 final drive and loves it.

Can anyone tell me exactly what's involved/needed for the Maxima final drive swap?

The ring gear, mainshaft, and possibly the bearings if you want to replace them while your in there. Input shaft seal might be a good idea as well.

Thanks, I found those during my initial search but then also found a conflicting post that stated:

" The main shaft out of the 03 spec v trans and the main shaft out of an 02 maxima trans is THE SAME MAIN SHAFT they have matching part numbers from the dealer. So why do you need the main shaft from the maxima in the first place???? "

Of course no one answered that. I realized we're lucky to have this forum after searching some of the other Nissan Forums. (a lot of theory with no actual experience)

Thanks for taking the time to post, I knew you did a 6 speed swap and there always seems to be a reason behind the parts you chose.
What year Spec -V tranny did you go with and which Maxima final drive?

I'm going to check out part numbers with the dealer, but what's your take on the posts that claim, "the dealer's main shaft part numbers for the Spec -V and the Maxima are the same"? I'm hoping to save $$ and effort.

You don't have to swap main shafts from what I was told. You can have Greg at GSpec confirm, but you should only need the final drive and any seals/bearings you want to replace.

Im using an 04 Spec V trans with the stock 4.1 FD and gears. I cant recall but im almost certain the pinion gear is part of the mainshaft but I could be wrong. I havent looked that in dept to it. I dont see how the 3.8 FD could work with a 4.1 pinion gear. Again unless the pinion gear is separable from the mainshaft and the FD includes the pinion and ring gear. Again i havent looked deep enough into it.

Yeah best bet would be to ask Greg V about it. He can find out the information exactly and can get the parts for you too probably cheaper than anywhere else.

I called the dealer parts guy today, there been a change in part numbers but it seems like the 02-03 Maxima main shaft is part number 322418H504, and the 04 Spec-V main shaft is part number 322418H506.

He said this doesn't mean they aren't interchangeable and with Nissan can sometimes even be the same part. He finally suggested trying some junkyard part to see what fits before ordering. (I'd just use junkyard parts if it was that easy)

At this point I think the most practical solution is to get some information from someone who has actually done this swap and tried to fit just the Maxima final gear.

The only one I know of is zer099. I'm thinking about sending a PM and asking him to post on this thread.

(update-just sent a PM to zer099 )

Very good information guys ....from what i know you have to match the pinion and Final drive gear. Due to guy pitch and also number of teeth to attain FD ratio...

I followed everyone's suggestion and called Greg V today. He said I was the second guy in the past 2 days to ask about the Maxima final drive swap.

He can get what ever parts are needed BUT he doesn't know which parts are actually needed for this modification.

Unless someone else, who has done this, speaks up, it looks like the most accurate info will come from zer099 when he gets back in town next month.
