Hmmm, if the thickness of the paper type is less than the metal, then wouldn't that lower your the compression of the VE that was using the metal gasket? Was there a change? Did Nissan compensate w/the block/head height somehow?

No, if you had a thicker VE metal gasket as an OEM part and you changed to a thinner paper-type VE gasket, it would slightly raise your compression. I am not sure how much though? Maybe 0.2? It would depend on how much thinner it was. The second generation SR20VE which is referred to as the '20V' has a thicker headgasket but also a higher compression ratio (11.0:1 vs 10.3:1). I would assume they might have milled/skimmed the head from the factory to raise compression but a different piston might have made up for the difference as well. I am not sure what they did to raise the compression on the 2nd gen. VE's. Maybe they skimmed the head and changed the piston and both helped to raise the compression??
Maybe one of the VE big dawgs on this forum can shed some light on this. I'm just throwing out possibilities here.
