OMG, I want to troll, so bad.

David, make sure you have a proper muffler on the car, with the right muffler, you can take it up to 12,000RPM, no prob.

Phew, sorry, I had to get that out of my system...now I'm relaxed.

Bottom line, David. The high port SR20 redlines at 7500, the low port, 7100, VE, about 8000. The engine was built to handle that from the factory and no more, that's why the ECU stops you from going any further, and it's typically pointless to go any higher, at a certain point, the engine cannot breathe any faster. Higher revving engines have special work done to them to make them work that high. They have high lift cams to make the engine breathe, they have stiffer springs to prevent valve float, they have deeper reliefs in the pistons to reduce interference, they have shorter stroke crankshafts to reduce friction. 9,000RPM is attainable through some valvetrain mods, but not as you are, 9,500RPM...maybe with C3 cams, titanium springs, and solid lifters.

Don't go past 7,500RPM until you know how to disassemble your valvetrain and put it back together. Having no rev limiter is what destroyed my VE. All it takes is a slight mis-timing between your left foot and your right hand and you're done. Get rid of that overpriced "chip." All it's doing (if anything) is screwing with your A/F, which can lead to bigger problems down the road.

Actually stock VE redline is 7,300 rpm but that is with the CVT trans.

There are two types of VE valve springs. Ones start floating right from 72-7400 rpm, and the other springs are good for 7800 rpm (source). Without removing them only way to tell is by hitting the dyno and watching when the torque falls off.

de's with stock cams, yeah no more than 7500 or so. With s4 cams they like to go all the way to 8k even in n/a form.

amen to this. I have s4's with stock springs & retainers my limiter is at 8k. I usually shift at 7500 +/- . I only bring it up to 8k in a "emergency situation" Thats on very very rare occasions.
