You cant tighten the tensioner. When the motor is off there will be some slack on the chain especially when pulling up like that it will easily depress the tensioner. If you have an old style tensioner probably best to upgrade to the new updated style. It seems excessive depending on how much you pulled up on it. When the motor is running oil pressure pushes on the tensioner creating its full tension. Even with the upgraded tensioner you will get slack between the gears as the cam lobes come off the rockers the intake cam will turn forward advancing itself a lot of times and thats why you will have slack in between the gears like that.

When resetting the timing just turn the cam to remove the slack between the gears and also puts the slack on the tensioner side so you can get the tensioner back in without issues.

Anyways put it at tdc with the lobes pointing somewhat away from each other if they are still even that close. Then see where your dowel pin locations are at and see if there is 20 pins between the dots on the gears.

You will be fine with your old tensioner and yes it will get tight when its running. The slack between the gears is normal. You could always replace the tensioner down the road during a next oil change or something since you have to remove the filter to get it out anyways on a highport motor. Just put the cams where they need to be with the motor at TDC.

How many teeth did it skip do you estimate, More than likely it skipped on the crank side of things so the sprockets for the cams probably just needed to be moved back into position. Glad to be of help. Its pretty straight forward job and glad you got it running again.

Timing chain skipped, realigned cams w/ motor at TDC and put it back together. Not much else to it.

yup thats what i did! and the first time i put it back together with only 19 pins between the dots and it ran super shitty lol so i just skipped it back the exhaust cam one back! and the only thing that was out was the exhaust cam! it was it was out like a half turn! but it all works good now!

Thanks for all the help
