Thread: Deepdown engine exterior cleaning.

I have a JDM engine that I want to get looking fresh again before it is installed .
I know alot of guys paint the block .I prefer not to do that,but I want to try to get a engine looking like new again on the outside some other way.
I want to get ALL the black thats uncrusted in the texture of the casting on the outside...know what I mean?Old caked on stains from sitting in JDM yard for who knows how long.
I have used typical degreasers and brakecleaner on it....but is there a chemical like muratic acid,or something that can be sprayed on and hosed off,or pressure washed off?.

What about steam?

OK I'm a pool Guy and I use these chemicals on the daily I hate muratic acid.
Brakeparts does most of the job why don't you try chlorine then wash off with water.
Any stain will come off with chlorine a brush and water so I don't see why it wont work.

simple green soak. engine degreaser. scrub. scub. brake dust spray. scrub, scrub.

thats really about it, youll never get that fresh look unless you take it all apart and boil the block.

Oven Cleaner works absolutely awesome at getting parts back to shiney again. Cuts through grease like nothing and will take off any buildup or stains as well and bring it down to the metal. You could also find like he said a chlorinated cleaner and scrub and rinse. You can get the block looking like new again.

If its heavily greased start with something like gunk or simple green till you get most of it off. Then go with a heavy duty oven cleaner. I like the orange scented one they sell at walmart. Works really well at cutting through that hard grease and removing stains and yes it will almost look like new when done if you take your time to get every nook and cranny.

I am gonna have to try chlorine before muratic acid...that stuff is toxic as hell to breathe and whatnot.You also have to spray it on and wash it off fast,it is so corrosive.I am mostly afraid of what it may do to the rubber hoses and seals.



yeah,done the simple greean,super purple route and scrub,scrub...just hoping someone has some deep dark hidden secret to save me some work,I guess

You could always sandblast it with baking soda or something for really nice results. Just make sure to protect yourself well if you do.

Oh or hit it with a pressure washer

Pressure washer won't do anything good by itself.. I recommend degreaser with a steam cleaner as well.. Scrub all you can and then steam off the excess!

i used this aluminum brightener stuff in a spray bottle with a brush, it worked extremely well, even got my trans lookin ok with that stuff. you gotta becareful to not get it on anything thats not aluminum cause it'll strip paint, eat finish off bolts and all kinds of shit im sure.

If you are taking apart the motor you can try soaking the parts in engine degreaser solvent that you can get from Napa or another parts supplier/store. I did that with my cylinder head and it came out really good.
