Thread: Transmission Gurus advice needed

A little back story, I bought a p11 transmission from a fellow forum member. He accidentally dropped it (well before I bought it) while installing it in his car. He said everything worked fine except fifth gear would pop out after 30 miles or so. Some guys at the convention suggested the fifth gear snap ring might be loose. Well, I just took the tranny apart tonight and really haven’t seen anything wrong with it yet. The syncros look good, the shift fork looks fine (appears to have typical wear), and the snap ring seemed to be in place. I did tap on it to see if it would seat more and really didn’t see any movement. I recorded a video of me engaging fifth gear. Is there too much play in the fifth gear or is that normal? Engaging fifth gear does take some effort while disengaging takes much less, is that normal?


If I can't get fifth gear to work properly, I am ok with that. This is really only going into a Auto-x/HPDE car and fifth isn't needed much.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say it looks like you have one of the new, redesigned 5th gears that aren't supposed to do this... o_O

He does. Its a 2000 p11 box. I think it may have been a linkage problem

Nate, everything looks normal and seems to be moving normally, except maybe a bit of excessive wear on the 5th gear shift fork (I've never seen that much).
An internal linkage problem sounds probable. If this happened to the old owner too, and after he had it out, it is likely something internal to the transmission. I'm sure you figured that much.

Now that I think about it it makes total sense. If the linkage is slightly bent for the fifth gear then the shift fork couldn't engage the fifth gear properly. The shift fork would be continuously pressing against the fifth gear engagement ring, causing the excessive wear on the fork. Here is another good question, will a b13 shift linkage work in a p11 tranny? I will be finding out in a could of days if no one knows the answer.

i doubt it, fork wear sometimes occur from resting your hand on the shifter while in 5th gear for a while, some people have that bad habbit

I ordered a fifth gear shift fork from GregV. It just happens to be the last p11 fifth gear shift fork in the States!
