If you have a volt meter start the car hook the leads up to the battery and see what the alt is putting out. With the car off the battery should read between 12.6-12.8v with the car running it should be between 13.4-14.4v max. If it's anything below 13v with the car running replace the alt.

Battery connections are good. Voltages are also in spec.

It's probably the alternator though if all the wiring is fine (including the stuff they told you to check above).

This connection is solid.

Not only does it supply the +12v you need for the alternator to know it can charge, but it also grounds through the alternator when it's bad. Have that wire lose some insulation from age or rubbing, and you'll get flickering lights like he described, as well as inconsistent charge voltage. All from one simple, easily overlooked wire.

Still waiting to hear what he's found, though.

Any info on how to check this wire? Is it the wire with the "clip" style connection that goes to the alternator? Thanks! So far all the connections are solid and clean, and connections are good for sure up until the alternator harness goes into the main harness. Don't really want to have to break into the main harness if don't have to (we'll see i guess though)...

Thanks all!

With the ignition on, it should supply +12v. I'd have to look at the diagram to confirm the wire color though. It is one of the 2 in that grey clip, though.

just wanted to let y'all know that the problem was a faulty alternator. Even though it tested fine at the autoparts store, i replaced it anyways cuz i checked everything else. Anyways, after replacing it the problem went away. thanks advance auto for the crappy alternator and the crappy alternator test machine!

I know this thread is from '11 but I have the same problem with my 91, the alternator belt is worn and loose, but it runs fine

Weird, you'd think they would be more likely to say its bad so you spend money to get a new one, unless they make more money off batteries.
