Thread: Battery and E-brake Dashboard lights flickering

Could use your help solving this problem!

So occasionally i'll be driving down the road, and the battery & e-brake lights will come on and start to flicker. This flickering lasts for maybe 5-20 seconds and then goes away. While the lights flicker on/off i can hear a sort of clicking sound that corresponds to the on/off flickering. I think the sound comes from behind the steering wheel. Also, the car seems to perform fine while this is happening.

Any experience or ideas on how to fix this thing? Thanks!!

Had this happen on my s10 way back when. I had forgot to put the battery tie downs back on tight and the battery was moving around and the cables got loose and were not making a good connection. Once I tightened everything down it never happened again.

Check battery connections, if they're tight you'll probably need an alternator very soon. Those two lights coming on means you alt is not charging your battery properly. If you have a volt meter start the car hook the leads up to the battery and see what the alt is putting out. With the car off the battery should read between 12.6-12.8v with the car running it should be between 13.4-14.4v max. If it's anything below 13v with the car running replace the alt.

Don't forget to check the large gauge connection(s) to the alternator itself. Those could be making poor contact.

It's probably the alternator though if all the wiring is fine (including the stuff they told you to check above).

Good point, forgot about that even though I had to solider in a new one on mine That was about 2 months after my voltage regulator went out and my alt was putting out 19v

like they said, if all connections are good then your alt is going out which is most likely the case but doesnt hurt to check the connections.

Bye bye alternator! Rebuild it!

Alt for sure, its just a matter of time.

don't assume the alt is bad, thats just throwing parts at it. Like everyone else who took more than 2secs to think about it, check your wires and do troubleshooting before assuming. There's more than you think that goes into the wiring for the alternator.

Thanks for help. I'll check the wiring first. If it is a bad alternator then good thing it came with a lifetime warranty
