Using highport valve train for a lowport RR 01 SE
I keep seeing where people is switching out the lowport valvetrain and swapping over to highport valvetrain because there is more cams available for the highports. Could this be a option? Im getting ready for my turbo build and have my motor on the engine stand and i was planning on getting some s3r's since there's not many options for the 00-01 sr's. I would like to have more options as for cams but i plan to leave the head stock thanks

I thought about this years ago but never went anywhere with it. I think you have to change the valves as well as the normal stuff you'd have to change anyway. The rollers take up a lot of room in the head so other things were adjusted if I can remember correctly. It's been a while. I think I remember reading that it can be done though.

Have you looked at other RR cam options such as Tomei, Piper and cat cams?

Yeah i sure have and jwt seems like the best as for the most duration of any cams out there but the others are cheaper and some are more expensive. I think im going to get a set of s3r's if i can put the highport valve train in my head but like you said you think you have to change valves ans stuff and i dont want to do that.

Found this on the old forum. I'm pretty sure I read this thread a couple years ago. Post 17 is the one you want for the details as described by JWT through a member. The whole thread has some good info as well.

The S3R's with JWT springs can rev to 7600 safely if my memory serves me well. Which should be high enough for a small turbo I would think.

Are you going to run a 4 or 8 CWC?

FYI, you don't have to go highport, you can also go lowport valvetrain (94-99). Roller Rockers are lowport too, but that's where the similarities end, thus we just call it Roller Rocker engine.

well I guess it makes sense what all would i have to do to switch it over to 94-99 lowport? Would it be worth my time and money to switch it for better cams if there are any better than the s3r's?

Eh I wouldn't bother with it unless your trying to make as much power as possible. Roller rocker arms are very efficient, I'm impressed how good a 5 speed fatty p11 feels with a roller rocker motor after you remove the header exhaust flow restriction (aka the cat).

Put a low port intake manifold and go to and 16 bit ecu and you should gain some decent power.

im guessing i would have to switch harnesses as well?

For the intake manifold and ecu yes. Reason intake manifold needs a new ECU, is because the RR throttle body wont bolt up to the DE intake manifold.
