My n1 had single hole bearings. Bottom end didn't look like it was opened and I got it with 60000kms

Not sure if he does but I hope he doesn't sell his high HP DE build. Just checked it out and it's a killer setup. Besides he has VE components in the build so he's done his homework. Good thread BTW. Should be a for sure sticky.

Been doing this stuff for 10 years now and have learned what works and what doesn't work. I used to do it every day but now I am a service manager and tell others how to do it everyday. Just to give my opinion, the 5 hole bearings are the way to go if you can get them. For most situations they are not necessary. Most people can run oem bearings and be just fine but for the price, why not get the best money can buy if you are at the point of building an engine. For most turbo cars I have done I have never even had to open the block, therefore oem bearings can take a beating. I like to push the limits of a stock block since they will hold more than enough power for what most people use their cars for.

not so much the VE itself, moreso the dumb and blind followers that have spawned since its become more easily accessible in the US

Good luck on the build. Again just make sure to spray out all your oil passages on the block, crank, pickup tube and head with cleaner before assembling. Dont want debris in there.

Before GTiR and VE were as easily available as they are now, us old schoolers used to have DE blocks modded to have those holes drilled in from the respective oil galleys

I have a JDM DE, would the 5 holes still be the best option even though I don't have a GTiR or VE block?

AWESOME posting!! I like it when somebody posts what they think. Keep it up maybe it will keep some of the people who dont know anything from posting. It irritates me when somebody post how to build a motor when they have never done it.

I have learned to sit back and laugh though.

If you have a JDM DE the 5 hole are not the right ones. You want just the regular bearings available for the SR20DE. You have to have the correct holes available on your journals to use the 5 hole bearings....the VE and GTiR have these holes stock. You can have a DE block machined and prepped for these types of bearings but AFAIK only a few shops know how to do it right and its not cheap work.

back in the day before VE and GTiR/DET were so easily found in the US it was the "hardcore" thing to do, tohave a DE block machined to GTiR specs....meaning piston squirter drill and tap and the 360* oiling holes on the journals....all of that plus basic block prep (line hone, cylinder hone, decking and a good flush) runs between $550-700 depending what all ntb done.

Need to bump this thread back up.

Is there any way to change the clearances on say STD ACL race bearings to get the desired clearance you want? I've heard of people using a scotchbright pad to take some material out of the bearing surface in order to get to a desired clearance.

I'm about to plastigauge my bearings but what is the point if you can't do anything about it. ACL std is ACL std.

If you are going to the trouble of plastigauging and are concerned the acls won't give you the clearance you want, get genuine Nissan bearings.
